To get to the Trailhead: From the Flagstaff area, take HWY-89 North East towards Page. Turn North West on HWY-89A North West across Navajo Bridge and toward Vermillion Cliffs. Turn left on an unsigned dirt road on BLM land just after mile marker 557. Please close the gate behind you. 0.75 miles down this road, the road gets sandy, so be aware. After this sandy spot, the road improves significantly. After 2.1 miles, bear left at a road junction that goes over a cattle guard. At 3.3 miles, bear left again. At 4.6 miles, you will pass an old ranch, labeled as Kram Ranch on Topo maps. The road here will turn right and pass through a fence. At 5.6 miles, stay left. This road continues towards the Colorado River and the Marble Canyon area. There will be some signs here asking you to help save the Brady Pincushon cactus. There are some small brown hiker signs in this area to help you navigate. After 11.9 miles, bear left. At 12.2 miles, bear right. Around 14.2 miles, begin looking to your left when you see Rider Canyon. When you see the Cairns and small brown hiker signs, you know you're there. This road requires a high clearance vehicle. ]]></c:value>

From Page, Arizona, take HWY-89 south to the junction of HWY-89 and HWY-89A. Turn right here and take HWY-89A North-west, across the Colorado river and to the turn off for FR-8910 (about 35 miles of driving, between mile markers 559 and 560). The turn-off for FR-8910 is well signed as "House Rock Buffalo Ranch Road". This is a well graded dirt road, easily passable with a high clearance 2-WD vehicle. After about 19 miles, turn left at FR632, which is well signed. This dirt road is more rocky and has some ruts, but is still easily traveled with a high clearance 2-WD vehicle. After traveling about 2 miles (and passing along a dirt runway... stay to the right!), you will reach a well signed junction. To the left is the headquarters for the wilderness area, to the right is the South Canyon trail junction. Turn right and drive the final 1.2 miles to the trailhead. There is a gate just before reaching the trailhead, please close it behind you. Keep an eye out for wildlife during this drive, as we were surprised early in the morning by a deer tearing across the road at eight in the morning... better than coffee to get your adrenalin pumping! This is also supposed to be a good area to spot a California Condor.

During or just after rains, the nice dirt road described above can be completely impassable to any vehicles. Best to stay away from this area if rain is in the forecast. ]]></c:value>

Take HWY 67 South from Jacobs Lake, AZ. Turn west (Right) on FR22 and zero your odometer. After 2.1 miles, go straight to stay on FR22. After 10.3 miles, turn right to stay on FR22. After 17.4 miles, turn left onto FR425. After 25.1 miles, turn left to stay on FR425. After 27.4 miles, turn right to take FR292. After 27.6 miles, turn right to stay on FR292. After 28.9 miles, go straight to take FR292A which will take you all the way to the start of the trailhead (odometer reading 30.5 miles when you reach the Bill Hall trailhead). The Forest Roads are are in decent shape and usually do not need 4 wheel drive to take. A high clearance vehicle would be helpful in spots. Since the opening of the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is not until mid May, depending on snows, HWY 67 may not be open until June. This road closes at the first heavy snowfall (usually November). Buy a good map before trying to find this trailhead.]]></c:value>

From Flagstaff, take US Highway 89 toward Page, AZ. At the intersection of 89 and 89A (near the small town of Bitter Springs), turn left and take 89A towards Marble Canyon. You'll continue about 33.4 miles from this junction to mile marker 557.3. Look for an unsigned dirt road on your right that heads through a closed fence. This is easy to miss. If you reach the signed Historic marker, you've gone about 0.5 miles too far. Drive through the gate (closing it behind you) and take the sandy dirt road towards the Vermillion cliffs. High clearance is needed here, as when we took this road it was quite crowned. We didn't need 4WD though. After 1.0 miles of driving you'll cross a wash (which was bone dry and easy to cross when we did this). After 1.7 miles you'll cross another wash that has a bit of a drop. I drove over the drop with no problem and on the way back realized that you could take a bypass dirt road to the right that went around it. After 1.9 miles of total driving, you'll reach an old stone house and the start of the hike. Park here and look for the dirt road that continues to the North East. This road will be the start of your hike. ]]></c:value>

From Flagstaff, take HWY 180 north towards the Grand Canyon. Once you enter the park, you'll head towards the Grand Canyon Village. Take the West Rim drive from the Bright Angel Lodge to the west. You'll shortly reach Rowe Well Road. Turn left here and follow Rowe Well road for 4.4 miles. This road turns to well graded dirt after about 0.6 miles. Although the road is in good shape here, to get to the trailhead, you'll need a high clearance vehicle and you'll likely want one with 4WD depending on how bad the road gets. Once you enter the Kanab National forest, this road becomes FR328A. After 4.4 miles on this road, you'll reach a junction with FR328. Turn right here and follow signs for Pasture Wash. Take this dirt road 15.8 miles to the Havasupai Indian reservation boundary. Sometimes this boundary is manned and sometimes it is not. If it is manned, you'll need to pay a $25 toll (as of March 2017) to the Havasupai tribe for passing over their land here. If this is not manned, you can go through the gate without paying. Continue on this road 1.8 miles and turn right onto the signed road for Pasture Wash Ranger station. The road here is more rugged and narrow. After about 1.3 miles (and through a few gates - please close them behind you) you'll pass the now closed Pasture Wash Ranger Station. From here it is another 3.4 miles on an increasingly rocky dirt road to the rim of the Grand Canyon and the parking area for the South Bass trailhead. ]]></c:value>

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR WINTER AND SUMMER TIMES:

For Winter Hiking: Remember that the South Rim is very cold in the winter. Snow and Ice may cover the trail for the first few miles. Crampons recommended.

For Summer Hiking (NOT RECOMMENDED!): Get an early start and don't hike during the heat of the day. Remember that the bottom of the canyon will be MUCH hotter than the top.]]></c:value>
