From Flagstaff, take HWY 180 north towards the Grand Canyon. Once you enter the park, you'll head east on the East Rim Drive. Take the East Rim drive until you reach the Buggeln picnic area. Go another mile past the picnic area and park at the gated forest road on your left side. If you reach mile marker 257 you've gone too far. Unfortunately, there is no parking at the trailhead and the trailhead is unsigned. Hike East along the east rim drive 0.6 miles (you'll pass mile marker 257) until you see a "no parking tow away zone" sign on your left, along with a small pullout. Take the trail here into the forest for a few hundred feet until you see the trail start sign.]]></c:value>

Being able to put one hand on each wall of the canyon and look up 200 ft to the canyon wall gives you an impressive perspective on hiking through canyons. Footing can be tricky and walking through the cold water in the shade tests your endurance. This is one of those hikes you will be talking about for months afterwards. This hike is Strenuous.

WHITE HOUSE TRAILHEAD: From Flagstaff, take US Highway 89 toward Page, AZ. Take HWY 89 west out of Page, AZ for 30 miles. Turn left at the sign for White House trailhead (between mileposts 20 and 21). The trailhead is 2 more miles on a well graded dirt road.

WARNING: Make sure you put the permit sticker in your car windshield before you head out... the fine is steep if you don't! Also carry your permit with you, as we met some forest service folks who were checking permits deep in the canyon.

LEES FERRY TRAILHEAD: From Flagstaff, take US Highway 89 toward Page, AZ. Take HWY 89A at Bitter Springs and cross the Colorado River at Navajo bridge. Soon after, turn right at the sign for Lees Ferry (before you get to Marble Canyon Lodge). After about 5 miles on this paved road you can park at the 14 day long term parking lot. ]]></c:value>

Sorry, grandma can't come. You probably want to leave the kids at home too if you're making this a multi-day hike. A day hike with kids partially into the canyon would be OK.

This is a rare and beautiful place, possibly without peer in the world. There will be many river crossings, so wear appropriate footwear. From Flagstaff, take US Highway 89 toward Page, AZ. From Page, it's best to arrange a shuttle from Antelope Canyon Tours (www.antelopeslotcanyon.com). The shuttle is about $75 per person. The shuttle will take you to the ruins of Rainbow Bridge Lodge, about 2 hours drive from Page on some tricky backroads.

There are two ways to get to Rainbow Bridge. The easy way is to rent a boat and boat up Lake Powell to mile marker 50. Boat up the canyon on your right and stop at the dock there. Then hike the mile to Rainbow Bridge. Now there is a much longer and more interesting way to get to Rainbow Bridge. In the times before Glen Canyon Dam, the only way to get to Rainbow Bridge was a long hike from the Navajo reservation. This route is only for the adventurous and athletic, but your efforts are rewarded by the varied views and impressive canyons you will pass through on your way to Rainbow Bridge.

However, be warned that the logistics for this hike are not trivial. First, you need to get hiking permits from the Navajo nation. To arrange this, contact

Lake Powell Navajo Tribal Park office
PO Box 4803
Page, AZ 86040
(928)698-2808
www.navajonationparks.org/htm/antelopecanyon.htm
Cost is $5 per person per day. Contact: Effie Yazzie, Park Manager
Second, you need to arrange an automobile shuttle to take you from Page, Arizona to the trailhead start at the ruins of the Rainbow Bridge Lodge. This is about a 2 hour drive that can be arranged through Chief Tsosie (www.antelopeslotcanyon.com). An early start is recommended. Third, make sure you have a friend of yours meet you at Rainbow Bridge at the end of your hike with a boat (and preferably a cold beer).]]></c:value>
