To get to the trailhead: from the Phoenix area, take US-60 East towards Globe. Just after Superior, take US60 another 12.7 miles to the well signed Pinto Valley Road (FR 287). You will be driving on roads that are constantly in use by the nearby mine, so please be careful and respectful so we can continue to enjoy access to this area of the Superstitions. Make a left turn here and follow the paved road. At the entrance to the mine, follow the PUBLIC ACCESS or HAUNTED CANYON signs to the Haunted Canyon Trailhead (#203). There are many spur roads here, but most end in a locked gate because they are used by the mine. At 2.8 miles from the US60 turnoff, turn left onto the well graded dirt road. After 6.8 miles of driving, the road becomes poorly maintained and you will need a high clearance vehicle to continue. At 6.9 miles, stay right at the fork. At 7.2 miles, you will need to make a left turn at the sign that reads 'Peak Well 26-29' to get to the lower trailhead. When we went, the road to the trailhead was closed due to high water in Pinto Creek. We parked at the sign and walked along the closed road. The trailhead is well marked and lies near a cattle pen. The trailhead is about 7.3 miles from HWY-60. Update (6-2-2011): A fellow hiker emailed me to let me know that the last mile of this road look to be permanently closed. To get to the trail, you'll need to follow the closed road to the signed trail near the cattle pen (thanks Chelsea!). Update (5-7-2013): The road was again closed, but the water level in Pinto creek was low. So this looks to be a permanent public road closure. It looks like mine vehicles still can access the road, but access would be very unpredictable. Plan on starting your hike here, as we did. There is limited parking on the right side of the road just before the locked gate blocking the road. ]]></c:value>

To get to the trailhead: From the Phoenix area, take HWY87 North, leaving the city limits. After passing the Sunflower turnoff, look for the Sycamore Creek Road turnoff (between mile markers 222 and 223). Turn let and take this paved road 2.8 miles where you will pass the Cross F ranch (private land, please be respectful). Another 0.6 miles will get you to the Arizona Trail signed parking area on the left side of the road. Cross the road from the parking area to get to the signed trailhead. One nice feature of this hike is that it is the only Mazatzal hike that is accessible from a paved road. ]]></c:value>

To get to the trailhead: From the Phoenix area, take US-60 East to the Idaho Road exit, turn left (North) on this exit. After Main Street, take HWY-88 which forks off to the right towards the lakes. After about 5 miles you will pass the Lost Dutchman State Park on the right side of the road. An additional 0.2 miles will get you to the First Water trailhead turnoff (FR78). Drive 0.5 miles on this well graded dirt road. The signed trailhead for the Crosscut trail is on your right. Park here, as this is also the trailhead for the Massacre grounds trail. The old trail access on FR28 has been permanently closed and the road no longer exists. ]]></c:value>

From the Phoenix area, take US-60 East, leaving the city limits. After leaving Apache Junction, continue about 8.5 miles, turning left onto signed Peralta Road (FR 77). After starting out as a paved road, this quickly turns into a well maintained dirt road. The signed Peralta Regional park appears on the left after about 5 miles on this road. Turn right here to enter the park. The roads in the park are all well graded dirt and while the junctions are signed, they are not signed well. From the entry road, take the first left (signed as Trailheads). You'll pass the 'main' trailhead on the right. Turn left at the signed intersection for the Picnic road loop. The next turn is another left onto Camping Road East (signed as Camping). Take this road to the Backpacking Trailhead and park here. There is a restroom at this trailhead, but no water. ]]></c:value>

From the Phoenix area, take HWY 88 North East out of Apache Junction towards Apache Lake. Eventually, HWY 88 turns into dirt. After the road turns to dirt, drive an additional 7.2 miles to the dirt road turn to signed Reavis Trail (right turn). There are a couple of dirt roads leading right in this area, so make sure you look for the Reavis Trail sign. From this point, it's 3 miles on a good dirt road to the trailhead. ]]></c:value>

From the Phoenix area, take HWY 88 North East out of Apache Junction towards Apache Lake. Eventually, HWY 88 turns into dirt. This road is OK for cars if you drive slowly, but it is slow going in spots, with some definite elevation.

To get to the trailhead: from the Phoenix area, take US-60 East from Apache Junction about 16 miles to Florence Junction. Another 2 miles on US-60 gets you to Queen Valley Road. Follow Queen Valley road for 1.8 miles to FR357. Turn right on FR357 (signed as Hewitt Station Road) and go 3 miles. Make a left onto FR172 and drive 9.3 miles. Make a right onto FR172A and travel 3.9 miles to the trailhead. For the last 3.9 miles, a high clearance vehicle with 4 wheel drive would be best. However, we have done this road with a high clearance 2WD. Following the signs to the Arizona trail and Rogers Trough trailhead will help you stay on the right road. ]]></c:value>

From the Phoenix area, drive Scottsdale Road North until you reach the intersection with Cave Creek Road. Turn right onto Cave Creek road and stay on this road for another 35 miles. The road will be paved for a good portion of the drive, but it will become dirt road FR24 at some point. FR24 is a well graded dirt road. After reaching the intersection with FR269 (Bloody Basin Rd), turn right and go 2.8 miles towards Sheep's Bridge and the Verde River. At the intersection with FR18, turn left onto this rocky road (you'll want to use a high clearance vehicle) and drive it another 2.3 miles until you can see the canyon formed by Red Creek. Park here (there's really no reason to drive down to the creek) and start hiking towards the creek.

Alternate Entry: From the Phoenix area, take I-17 North to the Bloody Basin exit (#259). This road (FR269) is a good graded dirt road. Bloody Basin road crosses the Agua Fria river, but the river is either low or dry most of the year and the crossing is paved. Drive 27.8 miles on this road until you reach the junction with FR18. Turn left on FR18 (rocky, but OK with a high clearance vehicle) and drive 2.3 miles to the start of the hike.]]></c:value>

The last 3.9 miles would be safest with a high clearance vehicle with 4 wheel drive, although we have done it with a high clearance 2 wheel drive vehicle. Following the signs to the Arizona trail and Rogers Trough trailhead will help you stay on the right road.]]></c:value>
