TERRACE MOUNTAIN, SNOW PASS, AND THE HOODOOS

If a loop hike through a forest meadow and through crazy hoodoo rock formations is for you, then you will like this hike.

HOW TO GET THERE

This hike is located in Yellowstone National Park, North Western Wyoming.

To get to the trailhead: Drive south from Mammoth 4.8 miles to the Glen Creek trailhead.

RATING

Be Aware of: Entrance fee to get into Yellowstone National Park, bear area

30 yr old Recommendation: This was a very enjoyable loop hike with good scenery. This is a Moderate hike.

DETAILS

Elevation change: about 500 ft gain and loss.

Distance: 6.2 miles for the round trip loop.

Time: It took us about 3.5 hours.

Time of year: Spring to Fall. This is a good early season hike because of the low elevation.

Solitude: Very good. We only saw perhaps 10 other hikers on this loop.

From the trailhead, take the Glen Creek trail north. This part of the trail is flanked on the left by a wide open meadow and by forest on the right. The wide open trail is pretty flat, makes for an easy stroll, and is a good place to try to find wildlife. After about 2.1 miles of hiking, there is a fork for the Faun Pass trail junction, turn right here and head for Snow Pass.

This section of trail turns into the forest and heads through the thick of the trees. After topping out 0.5 miles later at Snow Pass, the trail reaches the junction of the Clagett Butte trail after a total of 3.3 miles. Turn right here, hiking for another 0.4 miles as this trail descends to the Howard Eaton trail junction. Turn right here to head towards the Hoodoos. The trail descends again, but then starts a 500 ft climb up to the Hoodoos area. The Hoodoos are reached after 5.3 miles of hiking. The Hoodoos are formed from Travertine Limestone eroding away in strange patterns. The end effect is very unique.

After a total of 6.0 miles, you reach the junction of the Glen Creek trail. Turn left and hike the final 0.2 miles to your car.
