If walking through melted chocolate looking Supai sandstone in the Grand Canyon appeals to you, North Canyon is your hike. This hike is accessed from a river rafting trip on the Colorado River. This canyon is located at river mile 20.5 on river right. Be Aware of: Some scrambling. Flash flood danger. This is an moderately difficult hike, primarily because of the scrambling skills needed to get to the pour over. 35 yr old Recommendation: The highlight is the mind bending folds in the Supai rock layer. Good reward for a little effort. Elevation change: about 150 ft ascent to the pour over
Distance: 1.2 miles round trip (to the pour over and back) Time: It took us about 1.5 hours total. Time of year: Any. Solitude: This is a popular hike for river parties, expect to share it with another group. Map: Click here for map From either the upper or lower campsites at North canyon, look West towards the canyon. On the right slope, you will see a trail heading up the side of the canyon. This trail gets you around an otherwise impassable fall. The trail levels off and the remainder of the hike is on the flat Supai sandstone. The sandstone is the star of this hike. The layering of the rock in the narrow confines of the canyon make for a unique setting. Soon, progress is blocked by a wide pool and a pour off. We turned around here, having been unable to convince anyone in our party to wade through the fetid pool to see what was up the canyon.
