SNOOPY ROCK

If a quick hike to a well known landmark outside Sedona appeals to you, this is your hike.

HOW TO GET THERE

This hike is located near Sedona, AZ.

From the Sedona area, take HWY 179 past the Village of Oak Creek towards Sedona. After mile marker 312, look for a road to the right called Sombart Lane. Turn right and go 0.1 miles to the parking area on the right (but somewhat limited).

RATING

Be Aware of: Several trails intersect this area. The trail to Snoopy rock is easily missed. Some minor scrambling.

30 yr old Recommendation: This hike is too quick. This is an easy hike.

DETAILS

Elevation change: about 400 ft gradual gain to Snoopy rock.

Distance: 3.0 miles round trip.

Time: It took us two and a half hours because we got lost.

Time of year: all year

Solitude: There weren't many people on this hike when we did it, probably less thnan 10 other hikers.

Sedona has recently instituted a "Red Rock Pass", which is a fancy way of saying you need to pay to play. As of May, 2002, the fee is $5 per day per vehicle. There are plenty of places in and around Sedona to pay this fee and get the receipt, which you need to put on your vehicle dash to keep from being towed.

This is a quick hike to the top of Snoopy Rock and a good view of Sedona. Snoopy rock is not visible from the trailhead, so you need to start walking. Stay left at both of the first two forks. Now look down the trail to your right. See the mountains? See if you can pick out Snoopy towards the left end of the cliffs. There are lots of trails here. Don't try to find a particular trail, but head straight to him. It's not a difficult climb. If you reach a road (Schnebly Hill Road) then you've gone too far. Back track and try it again.

After you're warmed up from this hike, you will probably want to try one of the other hikes in the Sedona area.
